Amut for Ferrarelle - Food-grade rPET from bottle-to-bottle recycling plant

“With ournew recycling plant in Presenzano (Caserta, Italy), we take a step further inthe eco-friendly attitude we have been pursuing over the last years. Alreadyconcerned with several social and cultural international projects, Ferrarelleis also taking care of its territory, by increasing its productivity,supporting people employment, reducing waste volume and pollution”, stated PietroBortone, manager of Ferrarelle plant in Presenzano. Ferrarelle is a historicalItalian company bottling mineral waters, whose name identifies with itshomonymous brand: the quintessential naturally effervescent water since 1893.

Ferrarelle representsa best practice in the circular economy. It is one of the first companies inEurope involved in the beverage sector, that have decided to close the loop inPET bottles treatment by internally dealing the whole process. With Amutwashing technology, Ferrarelle will produce up to 3,000 kg/h of flakes recycledfrom post-consumer PET bottles and will use flakes suitable for foodapplication thanks to a re-gradation process. The high quality and purity rPETflakes will be processed directly to produce preforms and final bottles. After thebottling process, the new generated bottles finally reach the supermarketshelves.

“Under fullproduction process, we expect to exceed our annually preform in-houserequirement, actually around 700 million/year. The flakes we produced with Amutplant are of high quality level and why not find new sources of revenue, sellingrecycled PET to third parties, in a virtuous circle for everyone?”, commentsBortone.

Oncebottles bales are opened and sent to the constant feeder, a detector performsan initial positive selection to separate bottles from contaminants before thewashing phase. The solution for the upfront part of the line allows thetreatment of PET bottles bales not properly sorted, with large quantity of pollutants.

The bottlesare conveyed to the Delabeller-PreWasher, a patented machine working in dryprocess for both labels removal and first cleaning action. The dry processreduces the energy consumption. Two NIR detectors for colour/metal separation takecare of final sorting and purify the stream from any non-PET material. Theflakes will be washed with Amut patented technology: Turbo Washer and FrictionWasher carry out a strong cleaning action to remove all fine pollutants andglue. The combination of these machines allows the treatment even in case ofhighly polluted bottles, achieving excellent results in term of final productquality and output.
