Mondi Styria introduces two films for multilayer BIB products

Mondi Styria, a division of Austrian packaging firm Mondi Group, has unveiled two films developed for multilayer BIB products used to package liquid food products.

The new films – Styria Form Bar 50 and Styria Form Bar 90 DW – are ideal for both hot-fill and cold-fill applications.

Mondi Styria managing director Günter Leitner noted that the Styria Form Bar 50 is undergoing trials by an existing customer, while adding that no equipment changes were needed to run the film.

Leitner said: “We have now determined it is possible to replace the usual 66 or 70 micron polyethylene film with a 50-micron film, and we are the first company to be able to offer such a product.

“Downgauging in this manner results in the use of about 25% less material, while also reducing transport weight and hence the overall carbon footprint.”“Since this thinner film also yields more running metres per reel, this leads to enhanced efficiency and productivity for our customers.”

The company designed Styria Form Bar 90 DW, which is a monolayer film that measures 90 microns thick, by combining two-ply film comprising a 70-micron polyethylene layer and a 40-micron barrier layer. This results in a reduction of around 20%.

Customers currently combine Mondi’s 70-micron film with a barrier layer provided by another supplier to get the desired end result.

Leitner added: “Mondi, once again, is the first and only supplier of technical BIB films able to offer this type of mono-layer product.

“Since this thinner film also yields more running metres per reel, this leads to enhanced efficiency and productivity for our customers.”

The film is designed to eliminate a step from the converting process, as well as the need for users to buy two types of films. The ability to change two reels instead of four will also result in reduced machine setup time.
